Meow! Cat Trumps Iron!

I grew up with the old school version of Monopoly, and if there had been a cat game piece back in those days, it would have been my first pick.

Kudos to Hasbro Canada Corp., for crowdsourcing the cat — letting their community of Facebook fans vote for what they wanted to see replace the tired old iron game piece.

Do kids (and many adults) these days even know what an iron is? Bah! I don’t think so.

Brilliant social media move on the part of Hasbro Canada.

The new game set, featuring the cat, should be available by end of 2013.

       Enjoy the pics :)

Cat-souring!

Here’s a commendable example of Facebook crowdsoucing. The Seattle Children’s hospital – as part of their creative arts program for children with cancer initiative – sourced their Facebook fans’ favourite photos of cats in a grand effort to cheer up a 16-year-old patient in isolation due to a compromised immune system.

The project is aptly called the ‘Cat Immersion Project.’

The hospital’s Facebook fans posted more than 3,000 cat photos along with comments and messages that staff then compiled into a video projection accompanied by a purr soundtrack. They then created a tent of sheets around the teen and projected the cat images onto the cloth – in essence they created a virtual cat cocoon.

Normally cats aren’t permitted in the hospital, but this unique social media workaround brought thousands of kitties to comfort a girl in need.

How amazing is that!

Facebook: You Don’t Like Me Anymore….

Once upon a time, people went on Facebook to find friends, stay connected and share information. New research published in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media says folks are login in for different reasons these days.

Apparently, we just want to be entertained; the novelty of Facebook friendships has worn off.

“Using previous literature on the motives for online activity, the researchers asked participants to rate how strongly they identified with five reasons for going on Facebook: interpersonal utility, passing time, information seeking, entertainment and self-expression. While all of the motives influence one another — most people go on Facebook for numerous reasons at the same time — entertainment and passing time stood out as largest drivers, with self-expression being an important motive too, the researchers said.”

If you’re in the business of community management or marketing, you had better take this insightful research to heart if you want your followers to ‘like’ what you put out. Time to get busy with creative memes for sharing – for instance the rainbow Oreo cookie meme – brilliant creative BTW. As well as entertaining but short videos featuring any sort of cute creature, are good places to start.

Today companies might not be building Facebook empires, but more likely playgrounds for their fans.

Sh*t People Say is over! Done. Dated. Old news.
The new online sharing trend are poster-style memes: a block of visuals depicting what people are suppose to OR are supposedly doing in their professional day-to-day life. These are known as What People Think I Do OR What I Really Do memes.
I love this depiction of What Social Media Mangers Do. Especially how the parents interpret the role – hilarious!
And by the time you click on the link below, this trend will be on its way out too :P
